Due to its weak competitiveness and high light requirement, the European crab apple tree exists mostly at the wet edge of forests, in farmland hedges or on marginal sites.

However, according to DNA studies, the European crab apple malus sylvestris is the origin of of the malus domestica or pumila, together with malus sieversii, the wild apple of Kazakhstan.

It reminds me a retired old woman who is not paid attention. The grandmother of apples.
